The Passo Pordoi (2239 m a.s.l) is ensconced between Sass Pordoi
and Sass Becé, marking the border between the province of Trento and
that of Belluno. It is reached from Canazei after 12 km and 28 sharp
bends. Just a few hundred metres before the pass there is the famous
Hotel Pordoi (1905), the first hotel ever to be built on this section
of the Dolomite road and which still preserves intact its original
Liberty style frescoes. On the Arabba slope of the Pordoi pass there
is an ossuary that holds the remains of 500 soldiers who fell on the
Austro-Hungarian front. In summer, the pass gives easy access to the
Boé Group by means of the ultra modern cable way that quickly ascends
the 2950 metres of the Sass Pordoi peak. In winter from this peak
skilled skiers can tackle the demanding descent on the fork by the
same name or down the impervious Val Lasties. Due to the particular
characteristics of these tracks, they should be used only when in
optimal snow conditions. In winter from Passo Pordoi it is also possible
to reach the tracks of the Belvedere/Canazei ski area in just minutes
or start the descent towards the Arabba basin and the subsequent links
with the Sellaronda circuit. |
